After Jacqueline was born, Daniella had no intimate thoughts, and I understood, though no one else did. She heard things like, "It's been three months since the last baby; you should be showing by tomorrow."

At home I heard, "We're going to have to ease back into it slowly this time." Her expression told me that she wanted to but had to listen to her body.

For nearly a school year we were in slow gear, but that didn't stop us from conceiving another baby. At the same time she received a call from her former coach at UCLA, who was putting together a national softball team for a diplomatic tour in Asia to promote softball for the Olympics. While neglecting to tell me she was pregnant, it took her two days to talk me into letting her go since the workouts would be in Los Angeles. She had already weaned Jacqueline and promised to fly home every weekend until they left for Asia.

Against China and Korea, Danni pitched only at the end of easy games to give the younger women a rest, though she was only 26. Japan, however, easily scored runs until Daniella entered the game and beat them nearly by herself with a home run and two hitless innings pitched.

The television announcers explained that several team members had a 24-hour bug that caused violent symptoms, which included throwing up. Even Danni barfed on the mound but kicked dirt on it and pitched.

"She must've eaten the same thing everyone else did," said an announcer. The game was on The Wide World of Sports, which featured a pretty female interviewer, Betty Bravo, inside the locker room.

"Congratulations, Danni," Bravo said over the cheerful noise.

"Thank you."

Our families and a few folks from town watched on our big screen television.

"You came in and hit the game-winning home run and pitched the USA to victory, but it looked like you became ill. How did you make it through?" Bravo put the microphone to Danni's mouth.

"No, I wasn't sick like the other girls; I'm three months pregnant. That's why I hit the home run; it was safer than having to slide."

I knew she was trying to be funny with that last statement. I felt like I should have been angry at her for not telling me, but I wasn't.

"Hi honey," she said into the camera because Betty Bravo had lost focus.

"Hi Mommy!" Minnie and McKenna said to the television.

I laughed, and everyone laughed with me until Daniella continued.

"I didn't tell my husband because he wouldn't have let me come here."

That statement brought Betty out of her stupor. "He wouldn't have let you come? Who did you marry, King Kong? Did you have obey in your wedding vow?"

I saw Daniella's expression change instantly. "Mommy's mad at her," Minnie said from the look on her mother's face.

"I actually wrote obey into my vows," she said.

"Well, so much for the ERA amendment, which you just set back thirty years."

"No, you did that by brushing aside what I just did on the field while carrying another person inside me.
